Ever since little kids, whenever someone dropped something on the floor, they would call the “5-second rule”, meaning that if someone dropped a food item on the floor and picked it up before eating it, that they could then put it in their mouth. Is that really true though? The main reason that this experiment is being experimented is to know about it and to inform many and have them inform others. It can even end up saving a life if it ever came to that point. Knowing about the dangers of bacteria is very beneficial for it can lead to further investigations. Not only knowing about bacteria itself but other diseases or substances that can harm someone in any type of way or form. This hypothesis states that the longer someone leaves a type of food on the ground, the less it is good to eat. This experiment will give all the data and information to prove that this hypothesis is supported. The experiment will have certain materials needed to test such as; nutrient agar in sterile plates, sterile gloves, food items to be tested, sterile swabs, and timer. This experiment will help warn young to older adults, about what the dangers the bacteria on the ground can really do to someone’s body. A lot of people think of this as a light topic and do not give enough attention towards it. The reality of the matter shows that lack of carefulness in items you put in your mouth can lead to very regretful conclusions in life. Some are not going to completely stop, but there is hope that some will listen and be careful for their sake and for others as well. Bacteria, or bacterium, are strong prokaryotic single-cell organisms that are everywhere on Earth. Since the dawn of Earth, bacteria have been present. They have been able to adapt to many environments and temperatures. Although some of them may seem harmless, small, and helpful to its surroundings, they are really dangerous in numbers and cause diseases in both animals and people. In this experiment, the fruit will be dropped on the ground for different periods of time. Some of them for longer periods of time and some for shorter. Then from there, the fruit will be swabbed and data will be collected on how much more bacteria was on the fruit after it was dropped on the ground. After the fruit is swabbed, the bacteria are put in the Petri dishes and left out to grow big enough that the human eye can see. The fruit that will be tested is grapes. To be able to test them there will be a number of sterile and clean products that will be used so that the experiment is as accurate as possible. The way this experiment will be tested is with 3 different groups. The first group being the control. In the control, the experiment will start off with grapes not being dropped on the ground, with the grapes by themselves and with the bacteria that is already on the grapes from the beginning. The second group with different grapes dropped for specific periods of times. This is how and what the whole experiment consists of. Of how much more bacteria is on the grapes after it has been dropped, especially if it is for longer periods of time. The third group dealing with time, and the cleanness of the fruit. For example, one grape normally clean for 20 seconds, and the other on the floor for 20 seconds, and then see the difference and the increase in bacteria. Then the fifth group is almost the same but tested will different times. Lastly again the grapes never being dropped, but still out exposed to bacteria. Having all of this will lead to the conclusion of this experiment and show if it is same or not to each food after it has been on the ground, or if it just depends on the amount of time it has been on the ground. One of the materials needed is 12 sterile plates with nutrient agar. Having these materials is what will be tested to see how much it has on it. For the specific bacteria to be seen it has to be grown. The goal is to have the bacteria grow to a big enough size where the human eye can see it. Another thing is the location of where the experiment would take place. For this, there would be two different grounds. One of them being fairly cleaner than the other. The third supply is a timer. Having the timer is a real necessity, so that way the fruit can be timed exactly correct when it is dropped on the floor. Another really important supply is sterile swabs. The swabs will help with checking the bacteria on the fruit that has been dropped on the ground. In this experiment, there will need to be proof of each step there is. For that proof, there will be pictures taken. For this to be accurate the picture needs to be taken many times, and the experiment also needs to be tested many times. The way this experiment will be analyzed is through sterile plates. The food will first be dropped on the ground for a specific amount of time and then taken off the ground. This will be repeated over and over and over again on the different types of floors. Then the grapes will be collected and swabbed. With that same swab, a zigzag form will be created across the sterile plates. The bacteria will be on the sterile plates but will have to be grown to be able to see. This will be repeated over and over with different times and with different plates. This will then lead to how much bacteria is added to the fruit and how much bacteria was on the fruit, to begin with. The bacteria is then put in separate Petri dishes and left out to grow. Then the growth is recorded and watched. After all the experiments and testing, the main conclusion was made. The conclusion of this experiment is that the longer the fruit is left on the ground, the more bacteria it collects. The more bacteria a fruit has, the more harmful it is for someone to put it in their mouth and to digest it. It could be possible that if someone dropped a food item on the floor and immediately picked it up, it would be fine, but that does not apply in everyone’s case. An example of this would be, if a small kid drops a strawberry on the ground and really quickly picks it up, then they would probably yell out the five-second rule and then put it back in their mouth. In another case, if the small kid dropped a strawberry and left it for longer, then that kid could have decided not to eat because he knows that it is dirty and not good to eat. In another case, if the small kid dropped the fruit on the ground, but was on a dirtier floor then he might have decided not to pick it up in the first place. That is what most people think and hope that the kid would, but not everyone thinks and acts the same. That small kid could not have to know that dropping something on the floor makes it dirty and just picked it up. That is why people put out displays and physical awareness to inform not only older people but kids as well. Many people take bacteria lately and do not make a big deal of it. They think that bacteria is something that is everywhere and that is harmless. Bacteria are everywhere and there is no actual way of being 100% bacteria free, but that does not mean that it can not harm your body. Even products available to anyone and everyone, can not legally be labeled as 100% bacteria or virus free. That is because to kill something it has to be alive. Viruses are not alive so they can not be killed. Some scientists or biologists can agree to this statement since it had been tested over and over, just to reassure people and tell them that it is not a joke, but it is not proven as a fact. The average human has about the same amount of bacteria on their body depending on where they live, and what type of health condition they are in. If a person finds themselves with more bacteria on their body, then that is when it can start hurting their body and problems may appear. That is how people get viral infections and bacterial infections. These infections can become really bad and can also be very contagious. One of these infections is bacterial joint inflammation. Bacterial joint inflammation is really serious and causes a lot of pain to the person that has the inflammation in their body. This infection causes cartilage deterioration and serious bone damage. Another common bacterial infection is Salmonella. Salmonella is an infection commonly caused by food or water that has been contaminated. It is also very common for children, more than adults. The main spread of salmonella is through contaminated food. Contaminated food is a type of food that has been exposed to bacteria or virus. All of this damage and more can come from the simple cause of calling the five-second rule, and not knowing the damages bacteria can do to your body. That is why parents from an early age tell their kids to wash their hands and to be careful with what they put in their mouth. Other things like tv shows, video games, and etc, also show awareness about cleanliness and responsibility of kids’ actions. Not only is telling them about it good to do from an early age but also telling them the dangers and informing them so that they grow up knowing what’s good for them and what’s not. Based on the conclusion of this experiment, the hypothesis was not completely wrong but also not completely supported. The hypothesis was that as soon as the fruit hits the ground, that it is not good to eat anymore. The conclusion shows that it depends on how long the fruit is on the ground. As soon as something hits an unclean ground that fruit automatically has more bacteria than what it started with, but the longer a fruit is on the ground, the more bacteria it accumulates. The conclusion also showed that it mostly depends on what type of ground the fruit falls on. If a fruit falls on a somewhat clean floor for about ten seconds, it would most likely be the same as a fruit falling on a completely dirty floor for only five seconds. In this case, the hypothesis was not completely wrong so there would not be a need to change or adjust something. If another experiment stated a hypothesis and proved their hypothesis wrong, there would be no wrong in their experiment. A hypothesis is a guess or estimate of what the person doing the experiment thinks is going to happen at the end. Then that is when they experiment and see if their hypothesis is wrong or if it is correct. This experiment could be tested again in different environments and different times. Making a whole different test could even change the hypothesis and create it to be completely different than the other ones. It had different tests, can reassure that all the data is correct and that the information on it is correct. Once all the information is correct it would be completely perfect for other to read and look over, and to also inform themselves, and to be precautious either regarding themselves or regarding the children of a certain parent.
