In be discussed are Tawheed ar-Rububiya ; Taweed

In order to be called a Muslim, or to call oneself a Muslim, there
is certain criteria that has to be met for this declaration to be truthful.
Inshallah, in this assignment essay I will be discussing three categories of
Tawheed which have to be maintained is an essential part of Islamic faith. The
three categories to be discussed are Tawheed ar-Rububiya ; Taweed al-Asma wa
Sifat and Taweed al-Ibadah.

It is also very important to clarify that these three categories
were neither present in the time of the Prophet (??? ???? ???? ????)
nor in the time of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) for reasons
that will be briefly explained.

In the era of Prophethood the need for categorizing Taweed was not necessary
because this was a rudimentary part of faith and is highlighted in numerous
parts of the Qur’an for example Allah says:

??????
???????? ???? ????????? ??????????? ?????? ??????????? ????????????? ?????????
???????? ???? ?????? ????????? ??????????? ????????? ????????????????
???????????? ??????????????? ??????? ???????? ????? ??????? ????? ??????????
????????????? ??????????????? ??????? ?????????? ??????????????? ?????
?????????? ????????? ?????????? ??????? ?????????? ????????????? ????????????
????? ????????? ??????????????? ??? ???????????? ????????????? ???????

“Virtue does not lie in turning your faces to the East or to the
West. The truly good are those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, the
Angels, the Book and the Prophets, and who, despite their love for it, give
away their wealth to their relatives and to orphans and the very poor, and to
travelers and beggars and to set slaves free, and who establish salat and pay
zakat; those who honor their contracts when they make them, and are steadfast
in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. It is these who are truthful and
it is these who are righteous” ((al-Baqarah, 2:177).

. However, as the Muslim empire spread into
foreign lands and as a result ,different people with different cultures started
to accept Islam and thus also bringing with them different cultural practices
which they incorporated into the religion. It is at this point that the need
for the study of Taweed as a science became paramount.

The first category I will be talking about is Tawheed ar-Rububiya
or the Taweed of Lordship. Dr Muhammed Naim Yasin, Book of Emaan (according
to the classical works of Shaykhul Islam, Ibn Taymiyyah d.728h-rahimahullah)
retrieved from http://kalamullah.com/
“The word ‘Lord’ in itself refers to a relationship of dominance and
control. Allah’s lordship over his creation means that he alone is their
creator, master, and regulator of their affairs. “According to this statement
believing that Allah is your lord encompasses all aspects of our lives. Tawheed
ar-Rububiya means believing, with certainty, in all Allah’s Prophets,
scriptures, the seen and unseen, life and death, and the Day of Judgment. It is
the belief that Allah alone is the creator of the universe and everything in it
is sustained, protected, and provided to it by Allah alone. Allah says in the
Holy Qur’an:

????? ????????? ??????? ??????? ?????? ????????????? ???????????
??? ??????? ???????? ????? ????????? ????? ????????? ??????? ?????????
?????????? ?????????? ???????? ??????????? ??????????? ????????????
???????????? ?????????? ? ????? ???? ????????? ??????????? ? ????????? ???????
????? ?????????????

Verily, your Lord is Allah who created the heavens and
earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the
night with the day, chasing it rapidly, and the sun, the moon, and the stars
are subjected to His command. Unquestionably, for Him is the creation and the
command. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds. (Surah
Al-A’raf 7:45)

Another extremely important part is believing in Qadr(fate). The
belief that Allah has
complete power and control over the fate of his entire creation big or small in
terms of life or death. Qadr is also the fact that Allah knows all things that happened,
will happen and if something didn’t happen, what would have happened if it did.
If a person believes in Allah, but does not believe that he is the only god
such as the Christians i.e. the holy trinity or the Hindus who believe in a
whole array of gods who perform different acts, however this does not remove
them from disbelief (kufr), in fact this is what we refer to as Shirk,
associating other gods with Allah, and this is one of the major sins.

The second aspect would like to address in terms of importance of
maintaining Tawheed in Islam is the category called Taweed
al-Asma wa Sifat or the belief in the names and attributes of Allah. We can
only refer to Allah as Allah has referred to himself because this protects us
in giving Allah any false names or attributes. Muhammad ibn Khalifah Al-Tamimi,
Tawhid of Allah’s Most beautiful Names and lofty Attributes, retrieved
from http://kalamullah.com/ “There
is no doubt therefore, that the knowledge of Allah, His Names, Attributes and
Actions is the most exalted and most excellent branch of knowledge. The
comparison of this branch of knowledge to all the other branches is like the
comparison of Allah to all other entities.”Judging from that extract it is clear
to see that the knowledge of Allah’s names and attribute is one of the highest
forms of knowledge.

The
third aspect I would like to touch on is Taweed al-Ibadah and how maintaining
it in unison with the previous two aspects of Tawheed fulfils our belief
systems as Muslims. This means believing without a shadow of a doubt that Allah
is the one true God that must be worshipped alone. Taweed al-Ibadah means to
worship Allah in such a manner that is internally as well as externally.
Internally would mean in your heart and externally would be our acts of worship
such as praying, Hajj and fasting. The reason this aspect of Tawheed is
paramount is because one can have Taweed in the first two aspects i.e. Tawheed
ar-Rububiya ; Taweed al-Asma wa Sifat and still not pray or fast and in turn failing
the prerequisite of Islamic faith. Allah says in the holy Qur’an:

???? ??????? ??????? ????????? ?????
???????????

I did not create the jinn and the humans except that they may worship Me. (AL-DH?RIY?T
51:56)

By
virtue of this verse it is clear to see that our sole purpose it to worship
Allah and him alone. Dedicating and directing our worship to other
than Allah is a major sin called “Shirk”. This part of Tawheed is the marked
difference between us as Muslims and all the other faiths and this is why when
someone converts or “reverts” to Islam , the first proclamation is “laa ilaah
Il Allah” (the is no god expect for Allah) .This Statement/fact is the bases of
our faith.
