In this assignment, I will be explaining the present relevant literature and discuss the significance of lifelong learning as a part of my professional development as a nurse. I will also be discussing the factors that influence the learning process of individuals. And I will explain the importance of lifelong learning and why it is important me as a nurse. I will also be focusing on the learning style by using Kolb’s learning cycle and Honey and Mumford questionnaire. Therefore, I will clarify how learning style helps me to understand the relevance of recognizing learning style preference. Also, I will deliver the knowledge of learning and learning theories and discuss how I can deal with my weakness to succeed as a nurse by using the learning style. However, there are numerous theories but for this assignment, I will be discussing ‘behaviorism theory’ and the ‘social learning theory’. Firstly, lifelong learning is the development by which nurses obtain new knowledge and competencies which then progress interest and capabilities to take care of the patient as a trustworthy role model in practice. Therefore, Lifelong learning is not just about keeping up-to-date, but it is about ongoing growth as the healthcare professional (, 2010). And as it is stated in Milne, J. (2016) Nursing is all about lifelong learning since it is a very demanding job as patient expectancy are greater than ever. Due to the reformation of healthcare Nurses are accountable to adopt updated new information quickly as possible not just for the license registration but, for the patient wellbeing, high standard care and for patient safety. In the same way, NMC- Nursing Midwifery Council (2015) specified lifelong is about being up to date by continuing four professional development which connected to registration renewal process through the post-registration education, practice standards, keeping up with the training and conducts. Similarly, Steelman, V. M. (2014) wrote that Nurses should take their duty seriously by ongoing their learning and be seeking chances to progress and exercise their leadership skills. With regards to all above as a nurse, I must gain knowledge and upgrade healthcare information, which NHS provides the chance to develop personally, the right type of training for the job and a good line management as a guide towards the success. So, the value placed upon Nurses supporting each other’s while learning is vital and challenging Fox, J. (2010). Personally, what I believe as a Nurse is, we need to show commitment to learning, be compassionate for the quality of care and security that this is delivered in an informal and knowledgeable manner also follow all the rules and requirement. Revalidation (2017) CPD mention there is always change in technology, we should adopt it and learn how to change per requirement such as I must undertake 35 hours of continuing professional development as a nurse, in the three-year period because as a nurse I must continue the safe effective practice, progress new skills as it updates every year. As these helps me to engage as a part of ongoing practice from the everyday learning with all the healthcare professional.Additionally, there are two theory experiments helped me to understand the learning process they are as follow. David Kolb’s learning cycle (1984) shows four different stages of learning, each staged should be followed in the correct sequence and Kolb`s theory is mainly focused on people with internal cognitive processes learners which means that different people naturally prefer using learning styles and have different ways of learning which influence a person`s preferred style. Kolb`s (1984) learning cycle exemplified by four different stage learning cycle in which the learner justify all the bases such as Concrete Experience by participating in an action or any activity to learn new skills, Reflective Observation is checking in detail about what you did, Abstract Conceptualization is analyzing your feeling to show understanding of the concept as reflection observation gives you an idea and lastly its active experimentation gaining new knowledge to apply in the activity to prove what you have learnt McLeod, S. (2010). Therefore, V, L. (2010) claims that Kolb`s (1984) learning cycle is all about the experience which will transform through either extension or intention. The Extension means gaining knowledge from the active external experiment and intention means learning through refection of the experience. In a response to this, as a nurse I believe by learning Kolb`s learning cycle gives me chances to provide critical thinking in a clinical setting which I will have the skills to approach problems in a consistent and systematic ways that are challenged by numerous aspects, including limited clinical facilities and a lack of nurse faculty. Likewise, Honey and Mumford (1992) developed Learning styles known as Learning Style Questionnaire (LSQ) by Peter Honey and Alan Mumford, based upon the work of Kolb`s Learning Style (LSI) (1984). Honey and Mumford made the questionnaire that analyses general behavioral which shows people what kind of leaner people are and the LSQ identify how people learn through their preferred learning style. Honey and Mumford (1992) aim are that leaner should become capable in all four stages of the learning styles. The four learning preferences which are Activist, Reflector, Theorist, and Pragmatist. Activist are those people who act rather than think and prefer new experience and working in groups, Theorists are people who usually stand back and gather evidence and prefer having the people who seek the opportunity to apply what they`ve learnt and looking for a clear answer, Reflectors are those people who like to think things through logically and prefer to observe, time to prepare and analyzing working without tight deadlines and Pragmatist are people who like to get on with a job and make the decision quickly and prefer having a clear, opportunity to try out ideas (Maric et al., 2015).According to the results of the Honey and Mumford learning styles questionnaire. My dominant learning style indicated to be a Reflector in nature which is like my nature. Since reflector thinks before taking any action as I always like to think very cautiously because I like to observe and listen to my mentor without time pressures and will see for the variety of information before coming to any assumption. Therefore, I prefer to learn from activities that require reflective observation such as any form of lecture COCKERTON (2002). For example, begin a reflector allows me to learn best because when working as a group I tend to listen to other people ideas first and apply my own understanding to the discussion and give my opinion later. The understanding of learning styles will be useful for me as a nurse because it will help me to overcome any difficult circumstances such as, before I will be able to handle any responsibility of patients at first, I will have the closer look of patient needs and plan it before doing anything. Which will give me more knowledge about what I am doing. Moreover, it is stated in Cottrell (2003) that it is my responsibilities for my own success because identifying my learning styles means ways of enlightening my own performance. Correspondingly, it is also mentioned in Pritchard (2013) that it improves self-confident as I will have the realization of my learning preference and recognition of the learning process as well as the metacognitive commitment which I can improve the learning outcomes. Although, reflector tends to do its work after close observation and takes some time to get prepare this may affect slowing process if any immediate action needed. Which means there will be lack of quick decision making. To improve my learning style, I shouldn’t stick with only one learning style instead I should be using another learning style such as activist which will allow me as a nurse to think quickly and to the right decision for the patient needs which then let me tackle the situation without thinking for the long period of time. Furthermore, regardless of what is being stated by Kolb`s learning cycle (1984) and Honey and Mumford (1992), I believe that everyone has the different method of learning styles and are unique in their own way. Some learn by reading/writing, visual learners, auditory learners and kinesthetic learners by Neil Fleming`s VARK model who is the most widespread representations. It is stated that Neil Fleming developed in (1987) which intended to support students who understand learning in different styles Cherry (2017). Regardless of this, I believe as a nurse it would be successful for me to learn in different learning styles which can help me in the clinical situation such as in the hospital different types of the patient visit so it would be useful for me to have knowledge and understanding of patient needs. In addition, Burrhus Frederic Skinner (March 20, 1904 – August 18, 1990), commonly known as B.F. Skinner stated in his theory (Barash 2005) that we are born as a” blank slate” which means no knowledge, no understanding and stated that we learn through experience and the surrounding environment. This is also based on the learning theory that involves association and reinforcement. This approach suggests that reinforcement should be immediate. Reinforcement can be both positive or negative Dilman 1998 by the circumstances of the environment which can increase the probability of a behavior begin repeated, operant conditioning is the type of learning in which behaviors are initiated to earn rewards or avoid punishment (McLeod, 2015). Smith 2013 stated that punishment means unsuitable behavior which includes verbal reprimands or suspensions. Moreover, behaviorism theory makes it easier to quantify and collect data and information when conducting research. Because B.F. Skinner (March 20, 1904 – August 18, 1990), used two types of conditioning which include classical and operant conditioning. Roundy (2017) state that Classical conditioning involves unconditioned stimulus occurs when you gain knowledge without any previous learning this is called unconditioned response and neutral stimulus means no specific response other than focusing attention which is not associated with the unconditional response. As a nurse I can apply operant and classical conditioning as a part of the treatment, to change maladaptive and challenging behavior. For example, in healthcare provision, if a patient is scared to put an injection since she/he is terrified because of past experience that the nurse missing vein and having to give her/him injection again and again. As a nurse, it is my responsibilities to talk to her/him by the question about her previous experience. And the operant conditioning can be used on individual’s behavior by establishing a rewards reinforcement desire behavior. This can be the deal by using systematic desensitization which aims to remove maladaptive behavior and directly expose to the fear. As a nurse, I will be trying to create a hierarchy of fear to exposure the service users slowly to their fear so that in future service user he/she able to cope with it. As a nurse, I will do this by putting the service users relax and calm and making able to face their fear. Moreover, Albert Bandura (1977) in his Social learning theory focuses on the influence that other people, particularly role models, can have on an individual’s development and behavior. Which means through observation and learning through imitation has been adapted from the environment and people around have the great effect on the learner Bethards (2014).  Linking the idea with health professionals such as nurses are expected to demonstrate equality and showing no discrimination in their duty The Royal College of Nursing (2017). Which means as a nurse I need to express anti-discrimination ways such as by interacting and modeling behaviors to present equality and fairness to the patient and other staff members as the patient can imitate their behavior since I can keep the higher positioned career as their role models. People who have eating disorders would look for the therapist who can help them change their behavior. The therapist can use the idea of social learning such as suggesting patient watch TV shows where famous celebrities promoting to eat health-related foods as people can use them as their role models thus following. This can be done by researching about the patient and what`s best for the patient needs as Schneider (2013) stated that as a healthcare professional it is my and other professional responsibility to deliver safe and effective since it is the main factor to maintain an alertness and interest in research. And there are different kinds of research in nursing which provide the best care for the patients since it has been the part for a long time ago, containing both qualitative and quantitative research methods produce valuable knowledge for practice as it mentions in (2010).
