Literature teach this subject later in my life.
Literature allows us to become acquainted with
centuries of discoveries, imagination, ideologies and art. My love and interest
for it stems from the fact that reading can make you feel secure and at home,
while it can also start revolutions and provoke immeasurable changes. I have
always been an avid reader; books fascinate me. I love the idea that wherever I
am, I only have to open a book and suddenly I am somewhere else; maybe I am in
Jonathan Swift’s 1710 London and the rain is pouring down, in the streets of
Hugo’s 1862 Paris, or maybe I am in Arthur Miller’s 1693 Salem and I see
witches everywhere. Books are my home; they make me dream and travel, they
allow me to acquire knowledge and see different perspectives, but they also
provide a sense of comfort and security that I cannot attain with anything else.
It’s ineffable. Therefore, the obvious next step of my academic career is
studying English literature at university level; I would like to teach this
subject later in my life.
I am a very focused, disciplined and passionate
student. My passion for literature and studies led me to do a Diplome d’Études
Collégiales in Arts, Letters and Communication, profile Languages. This DEC
allowed me to further my knowledge in various fields of literature and languages.
For instance, I took classes on German and Spanish languages, Poetry, Drama,
Short Stories, Québécois and Canadian Literature and Literary theories, as well
as Philosophy and French as a mother tongue. These classes and the different
approaches used by teachers allowed me to develop various skills and qualities
such as my ability to write, both formal essays and less formal writings such
as journals, my capacity to work in teams, my independence and the skill to
interpret texts and communicate my opinion. I believe that the skills I have
developed during my DEC will be extremely valuable and will complement my
studies in English at university level.
During my time in cégep, I have been on the Dean’s
Honour List for academic achievement. Furthermore, I am a student
representative of my program. This enables me to be involved in the program’s committee
as well as in the student life by organizing events and giving a voice to all
students. This experience contributes to the improvement of my leadership skills
and my confidence; it allows me to share my ideas and make them come to life.
It also gives me the opportunity to develop better relationships with my
teachers and to get insights on what it means to be a teacher, which reinforced
my decision to pursue a career in education. I also am a tutor in French and
English. This experience proves to be extremely rewarding; it enables me to
help others and to promote my passions for these languages. Moreover, I am in
the Prix littéraire des collégiens, which is a literary prize awarded to
Québécois authors every year. Being on this committee allowed me to read and
interpret different texts and to discuss them with my peers. This developed my
capacity to present my position and my analysis of various literary works in
Additionally, in the last four years, I have been
working part-time in an independent bookstore. This allowed me to acquire
skills such as attention to details, customer service and numerous
communication skills. Furthermore, this job enabled me to get involved in the
book market in Québec; I took part in the Salons du livre and various
associations related to independent bookstores in the province, such as the LIQ
and the ALQ. This job allowed me to realize how important books are and how
empowering it is to fight for what you love and what you believe in. During the
last four years, my love for books and reading grew and made me realize what I
really wanted to do in life. I am a determined and ardent student and person; I
believe I am ready for this demanding English course.
