Lucy of the major problems is reducing

Lucy GarabedianMrs. Bowers CGC1D1-0722 January 2018Urban Sprawl Who is involved/affected? Who is working on a solution?Urban sprawl affects all living things. Canada’s north areas have harsh weather which isn’t the type of weather for farming, west areas are mostly made of mountains and urban cities,. The rest is used for agricultural, since the land is fairly useful with mild weather, most Canadians live on the east side. “Despite its huge area, Canada has relatively little dependable farmland.”(Livingstone). Urban sprawl is affecting Ontario’s Farmland, and the Greenbelt. Life is already expensive in Toronto and the GTA. Due to a lot of people moving here, the economy rates are going up. Therefore, life will be even more expensive to future generations. Urban sprawl has many negative effects. One of the major problems is reducing the carrying capacity of some ecosystems. Urban sprawl is extending living limits, which makes people more dependent on automobiles causing even more pollution. Some companies, local communities are working on solutions. The Canadian government is working on this problem too. “Greenbelt Plan and Places to Grow legislation, as well as the Oak Ridges Moraine and Niagara Escarpment plans aimed at protecting sensitive environmental and agricultural areas.” (Pigg). It is important to control urban sprawl, humans can not unbuild their structures, but they certainly can work on protecting the rest. The earth needs to be managed according to certain use of resources in order to make life easier for future generations. What are the details of the issue and the solution? What challenges are people/the environment facing? One of the biggest challenges earth is facing is Urban sprawl. People keep adding houses, buildings and industries outside of Toronto, because of lack of space inside of the city. Therefore, GTA is growing twice as fast in the last 100 years. People are not only noly impacting farmland, ecosystems and pollution, they are also using resources to build at a faster rate. It will be a challenge to deal with lack of resources in the future. According to the U.S. Green Building Council , “Buildings account for an average of 41% of the world’s energy use. The two other biggest energy consumers don’t even come close.” (USGBC). On the other hand, animals living in ecosystems close to GTA are not able to adapt as fast as humans. Native land species are endangered, some animals cannot find new habitats once their home is taken by buildings. The reduced carrying capacity of some ecosystems is resulting decrease in the number of native species. Despite the fact that Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world, half the land is useless for farming; therefore, there is little farmland left. One of the ways to solve the problem is by spreading the development of urbanization across Canada in an environmental friendly way. Some communities are suggesting people to move to “foster denser, more walkable communities with transit”(Grewal) Not all land is dependable for farming, but most of the land is good enough for building. In conclusion, everything is affected by urban sprawl. Where is this happening? Urban sprawl is mostly happening in Greater Toronto Area (GTA). When people concentrate in a small area with not enough jobs, some of them would choose to build new homes/ businesses on the edge of the city. “GTA have undergone a fundamental shift from primarily single family suburban dwellings to more intensified urban dwelling types.” (Collins-Williams). Toronto/GTA is now double the size it used to be. This is a major problem All over Ontario, urban sprawl is invading farmland to be build more households. When did this problem begin? The problem began after world war II, baby boomers were born and a lot of people emigrated from their countries to Canada’s sustainable economy system. In the 20th century people were moving outwards to other places. People started moving or immigrating back to Toronto in the 21st century and started building more into the GTA. This problem began when higher technologies were invented and GTA became known among the world. Why is this issue happening? Why is this issue difficult to solve? Why is it important to resolve this issue? This keeps happening, because people are building more highways to connect what is outside of the city, it causes people to start building close to it which is one of the causes of urban sprawl. It is important to solve this issue, because this is leading to deforestation, more pollution, and destroying homes of  many species. This is a difficult problem to solve, because everything is already built, and there is no way of going back in time. It is also hard to solve because people are desperate to build more and they cannot just cannot just unbuild everything.  Rather than trying to save nature from ourselves, people should focus more on ways of protecting what is left of it. More than 50% of fruit production of Ontario is located in Ontario (Pigg). There will be more food supply needed as the population is growing. Having food resource close to a large population is really important for survival. It is important to solve this issue to preserve green space/ save the greenbelt for future generations. In conclusion, nature is a really important part in human survival. How are people affected by this? How can we solve this issue? How can we spread awareness? Urban sprawl is leading to increased air pollution, water consumption, loss of wildlife habitat, economic disparity  (Negative effects of Urban Sprawl). Due to increase of traffic use, people have a higher chance of obesity. One of the ways Ontario can solve this problem locally is by collecting future stats would be a requirement in order to hit target growth rates. People should tend to construct more buildings rather than houses, because buildings can occupy larger populations. The places to Grow Act helps control growth plans that coordinate with strength and opportunities available (Place to Grow Act, 2005). One of the issues the future generations will be facing is lack of knowledge of basic information and problems due to high technology and no effort into researching the issue. Spreading awareness is very crucial, it can be done using newspaper articles, tv shows, and presentations.Toronto Star, and many newspaper articles are spreading people with at least basic information about problems facing them. 3.5 million people are set to move to GTA and Hamilton in the next 25 years (Grewal). It is important to plan ahead, if the cities agree to pay for future transit, the government will take steps into pre-zoning the areas. Thus, spreading awareness and making plans is not enough, solutions must be put to action and studied with their long term positive and negative effects on the environment. For example, buildings can occupy way more people than houses, but they also need to the whole building and use more electricity for elevators and extra stair lightning. It would still be better to have buildings, because on the other hand, there would be less roads needed and less use of space to preserve nature. Greenbelt plan/Growth plan are important plans especially in Ontario, to protect the remaining parts of nature and the Greenbelt. In conclusion, nature is the most affected by urban sprawl.
