Net was, had never even heard of it.
Net neutralityIn this day and age, the internet is a very powerful tool that has become a source of information and entertainment, widely available to most people in Canada. We use the net for everything, everyday without thinking twice about it. Now imagine what would happen if you no longer had access to the internet. If you had to pay extra to go on Instagram or watch your friends snapchat stories, and had to go to the library every time you had to research for a school project. Imagine if you went from having all of the information in the world at your fingertips to having nothing. On November 21, 2017, the FCC(which stands for federal communications commission) revealed plans to repeal net neutrality in America, on December 21 a vote was held, the results were 3-2 vote to repeal net neutrality. When I asked people about their opinions on net neutrality after this vote, I was surprised to learn that many of them didn’t know what net neutrality was, had never even heard of it. Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, platform, application, or method of communication. Under these principles, internet service providers are unable to intentionally block, slow down or charge money for specific websites and online content. Some people don’t care because this is an issue mostly affecting Americans, so they feel it won’t affect them, but will, America has a significant influence over the rest of the world, what happen there will affect us. Many people who have built their careers on the internet, like youtubers and media companies, in America will not have enough money to continue their work. People also don’t seem to know that Canada is fighting its own battle for net neutrality. While everyone has been focused on net neutrality in America, the telecommunications act is up for review in Canada.I hope that from this documentary people will understand that the repeal of net neutrality comes with serious consequences, ultimately affecting our freedom. I want people to feel informed about net neutrality.
