People all over the world have created more than 1 billion music playlists and over $500 million has been paid out to holders since the creation and launch of Spotify, which makes it very clear that without big data, Spotify would not exist.  Spotify, a commercial music streaming service, was created in 2006 by a team at Spotify AB, in Stockholm, Sweden and launched in 2008 by chief executive, Daniel Ek.  Spotify’s goal was to supply the soundtrack of the current technology like how Google provides the search, Facebook the identity, and Amazon the retail.  Ek states in an interview “We’re bringing music to the party.” because rather than being a founder of a mere music player, he aimed to be the founder of a music service that creates an entire music ecosystem.Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio and many other music services have greatly changed the music distribution and artist discovery by customizing for users based on their own behaviors and song preferences. And they do this via big data, in fact, Spotify’s entire business is based on big data. Spotify makes itself a data driven company, which means that data is made use of in all aspects.  For example, each day, around 600 GB of data is created by Spotify users as they listen and share songs, create playlists and use in-platform apps.  However, there is enough room for all this data because the company has 28 PB of storage.  Since Spotify processes a lot of data for many different reasons, such as business, music recommendation, ad serving and more, they serve billions of streams in 61 different markets and add thousands of new tracks every day.  To organize this enormous amount of data, they have a 2500 node on-premise Apache Hadoop cluster, which runs more than 20,000 jobs a day.In today’s society, big data for streaming music services impacts more than just the music ecosystem.  The data for these services are also used in decision making, providing forecasting information, business analytics, and many other forms like mentioned before.  For example, in 2013, it used streaming data to predict the winner of the Grammys.  They were able to do this by observing and analyzing the user’s listening habit by taking into account the song and the album that was streamed to determine the popularity of the music.  Spotify also impacts people’s simple and daily lives.  Through big data, Spotify uses its huge song library and changes music discovery for each user.  As seen in the picture/graph below, Spotify is able to collect data of when and how often a Spotify user listens to certain song genres.  Because of these small but great features that Spotify offers through big data, the number of listeners are rapidly growing, therefore, there will be a lot more data created in future years to come
