Preston Chen (4)Mrs. MarturanoDecember 26, 2017The Last Lecture Essay Randy Pausch was a computer science and human computer interaction professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Randy Pausch was born in Baltimore, Maryland but grew up in Columbia Maryland. Randy graduated his high school in Columbia, and earned his bachelor degree from Brown University, and got his PHD at Carnegie Mellon University. Pausch was also a well known researcher, he worked with many different companies such as adobe, walt disney, and google. From the years 1988 to 1997 Randy taught at the University of Virginia. Randy battled against terminal pancreatic cancer, and during his fight against cancer he became well known for his speech known as “The Last Lecture,” which was later published into a book. With his remaining 3 to 6 months to live he wanted to tell his students what he would say if he knew he was going to die. Pausch was married to Jai Glasgow and had three childrens, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe Pausch. “…The brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”( page 73) I believe that this tip from Pausch really impacted me greatly. This quote wanted people to understand that we all face some kind of obstacle in our life. There are some people that would pack their bags and back away from this obstacle knowing that it’s not worth the investment to break this wall, but some are willing to spend their whole life to take down the wall. What Randy Pausch is trying to teach in this quote is that you should look at this wall or obstacle ad determine whether it is a long distance away from you or it is right in front of you and standing between your goal. If this wall is a long distance away then you should consider abandoning that goal because it would just be a dream and would not be worth taking that long road. If the wall is right in front of you, standing between you and your goal then you should overcome it without a doubt. Like what Pausch said “The bricks are there for a reason,” there will always be a wall wherever you go. The purpose of the wall is to differentiate those that want it and those that don’t. Another tip that I realize in The Last Lecture is when Pausch stated “Complaining does not work as a strategy. We all have finite time and energy. Any time we spend whining is unlikely to help us achieve our goals. And it won’t make us happier.( page 139) This quote made me realized that the one commodity that is most valuable in life is time. Some people say that the minute you were born you start dying. Some people make it happen faster, and some people try to make it happen slower. This quote helped me realize how much time one can waste everyday doing things that are not even near the goals or ambition that we have set in mind. There are so many times in a day where I ask myself did I finish what I planned today. In order to live life to the fullest you must not waste time and do the things that you love with the little time you have. Pausch was shocked when he realized that he had pancreatic cancer, but that horrible news made him want to make a difference. With the little time he had, he wanted to be happy so he put his time in his family. I thought the book was great I learned many lessons throughout this book. This book made me realize more about myself and what I can change throughout my life. I would recommend this to other students or teachers in other schools because there are important lessons about life that every student and teacher should know. I would also recommend this book to my friends and family because knowing how spend our time efficiently is important, there is only so much time one can be on this earth.
