The Impact of Parent’s Occupation on
Academic Performance of the Students

Parents are the persons in raising
children that is why family is recognized as an important part of
socialization. So, the importance of family cannot be measured. Nowadays,
parents especially mothers are working for the future of their children they
will do everything for the needs of their child especially money that they
didn’t even notice that because of their hard work they give less attention to
their children. Children are also affected of the absence of their parents that
eventually it also affects their academic performance in school. Children whose
parents are working would probably have an inadequate child care or to go
unsupervised. The stress of the parents bring home also detracted to their
parenting skills and eventually also became the children’s stress. But it also
has a positive side of the children. They would see their parents as a role
model in terms of being so passionate to their jobs.

            The
academic performance of the child also varies first, the socioeconomic status
(SES) of their parents if they can avail the expenses for the educational tools
like books. Or more access to the better education. The Second is their Family
on how big they get influenced by their family, on how is their relationship
with their parents, on how they are to there are to their parents. Third, is on
how their parents do their duties to their child, how do their parents
parenting them, how do they parents guide them especially in their school, if
they have time with their parents to teach them if they needed some help in
their assignments. Fourth, effect of parent’s occupation to the children’s
academic performance on how they performed in school, on how they interact to
their teachers, on active they are on the activities in school that if their
parents have time to bond with them or their parents are always busy.

            Also,
parts of the academic performance of the children are the educational
attainment of their parents if they graduated in school, if they have a
bachelor degree. The occupation status of the parents if they have a regular

Socioeconomic status (SES) is a grouping
of people with similar occupational, educational and economic characteristic.
The socioeconomic status implies certain inequalities. Some parents have a higher
access jobs than others and they have different level of educational attainment
and some people have a better education, economic resources and different level
of power to influence a communities institutions. The children in the rural
towns may have a different upbringing from those children of most farmland.
Also the students of a higher class’s family have a different way of learning
than those children of domestic workers. Students from lower class backgrounds
are less advantage than middle – class students whose enter school with the
knowledge of how to count, to name letters, to cut with scissors, or to name
colors. However, Ajila (2000 p. 7) pointed out that the home has a significant
influence in terms in psychological, emotional, social and economic state of the
students. The state of the home affects the individual since the parents are
the first socialization agent in a person’s life. Farmland area students also
experiences inadequate school facilities, shortage of teachers, poor
infrastructure development like schools, roads, chairs etc., poor communication
network among the government unlike the students in the city. We notice that
parents with high income take their children to school earlier than their lower
income counterparts. They can afford to take their children through preschool
learning and this have a greater impact in their later educational outcomes
since it provides them with the required cognitive and social development. This
is unlike the low income families who do not afford preschool learning for
their children and prefer having their children jump to grade one. Low socioeconomic
parents is willing and just eager to help their children to succeed in their
education because they are their hope to be lifted to the economy class but
they are limited by their low level of education, income and education.

Second is Family, it is the one that
influences as the most. Here, we should ask how big is the influence of the
family to the academic performance of the children. How the family influence
their performance in school? Is it positive or negative? Like that questions in
my mind.  The parent’s involvement in a
child’s education is consistently found to be positively associated with a
child’s academic performance.  It is
because the family background and the context of a child’s family do the effect
in their reaction to life situation and their level of performance. The school
is responsible for the knowledge that make up the individual during the school
period, yet parents and the person experiences at home play a tremendous role
in building the personality and making them on what they are. Also conversation
with the children helps them to be more confident and participating in school. If
you have a firm foundation in your family it can also have a positive effect in
the student’s academic performance but if your family is complicated it will
have a negative effect in your child’s academic performance. It will cause
him/her to rebellion, not paying attention to school, absences and many more
because they can’t concentrate in school and their mind is filled of the
problem in their house. Our family is the big factor of what we are right now,
if we have a nice foundation of family it can lead us a bright and positive
mind or ambiance that can also lead to s bright future to their child but if
our family has a complicated status it will strt for the child to be arrogant
and negative thinker that can lead them to a mislead future. That is why family
is the big factor of what we are right now.

Third is Parenting, it is also one of
the factors on the result of the academic performance of the children. This
asks in how your parents nurtured you. How they guide the children on their
studies? How they relationship with their parents? Like that. Parenting is a
tough job for the parents especially when the students gets their puberty age
because it is the time where their children started to get aggressive and wants
to be free and happy, realizing what they wants and rebelling. Parental
encouragement and support for learning activities at home combined with
parental involvement in schooling is critical to children’s education. Parents
are the first and continuing educators of their children. There are various
ways of parenting to affect the academic performance of the child. The most
effective id the parenting style. There are 4 parenting styles the
Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive and Neglectful parents. Authoritative
parents are the parents who use spanking or physical method as a parenting.
Authoritarian parenting is a parenting style that being strict to their child
by curfews, grounded and etc. There are also some parents that they are not so
strict to their child but they do also guide them by giving them some
encouragement words or giving them some advices but there are also those
parents that they do not give pay attention to the needs of their child and
just let them do they want. They do focus on themselves that they give some
attention to their child especially when they are busy to their work and they
can’t leave it alone especially to those workaholic parents that they didn’t
notice that their child needs some of their attention, advices, love and
comfort.

Fourth would be Parent’s occupation. According
to Marnot, (2004) (p.23) Occupations are ranked into most prestigious
occupation and lower ranking. It is important to note that parents’ occupation
plays a significant role on students’ academic performance. The most
prestigious occupations are physicians, lawyers, engineers and other government
employees. While the lower ranking occupation are bartender and helpers,
dishwashers, janitors, maid and etc. When parents have a better occupation,
they make adequate provision for their children education. They provide their
entire child’s need to support them and this would make the possible for the
children to perform well in their school. Parents with lower or less
prestigious occupation are always battling with how to satisfy their needs in
the life as such they pay little attention to their children education. They
lack so many advantages as compared to those from the parents with high
prestigious occupation. Occupation status measures social position by
describing job characteristics, decision making, ability & control and
psychological demand on the job. Parent with the prestigious occupation is more
likely to identify their children’s problem to give a possible solution. They
also help them to do their homework by providing facilities necessary for
learning development. It is possible as a prestigious occupation is connected
with income level. Prestigious occupation parents have better income stability
that would make it easier for them to make adequate provisions to their
children’s learning development. Occupational status reflects the educational
attainment required to obtain a job and income levels.

 Parent’s Level of Education. In this study
parents education attainment is also important because it can also affect the
academic performance of their child. Parent’s level of education is important
to schooling as parents want their children to maintain the status quo. If the
parents didn’t have some bachelor’s degree they can’t answer well on the
questions especially the homework of their child. If parents is more highly
educated especially mothers have greater success in providing their children
with cognitive and language skills that contributes a big success in school. It
is also believed that parents with higher educational levels have stronger
confidence in their children’s academic abilities and they also have higher
expectations of their children. They expect that their child will earn good
grades behave well in school and attend college. These expectation and
confidence in their children motivate them to do well at school. The confidence
parents have in their children also helped them to build their own confidence
and self-concept which is important in their education. (Mallan, 2009)(p.
10).  However, over expectations might
also cause stress to their children which makes to poor academic performance of
the child because of the pressure and worried them would experience? We all
know that children learn by example often through observations at their home.
If a child’s parents are reading books, taking them to museums, libraries – all
activities connected to education the children will engage in  a number of direct learning experiences that
will them to achieve the best education.

Child’s Academic Performance. We
should know the GPA of the child. HisHer performance in school. How he
participate in activities. Students’ academic performances have the influence
of their environment especially by their family. Their academic performance
will be the bases of this study. This will be serve as the guideline for this
study. Academic performance of the child shows the result of his/her level of
participation in school.
