You may think organic farming is very easy procedure but there are numerous things to it than just not using pesticides, fertilizers, etc. There are over 669 certified organic farmers in Ontario in 2007 with over 10000 acres of land for crops and livestock. There has also been a recent 10% increase in recent years for organic farmers.General Principles and Promotions Organic farming is very complicated with many rules and regulations to follow. There are a few general principles all farmers usually follow. The main intention of organic farming is to preserve the area, this means minimizing soil deterioration and erosion, decreasing pollution, etc. Another main idea is to control soil fertility in the long run and manage crop diverseness. This means that the soil is capable of developing different types of crops. Growing organic livestock also has its principles. You must provide attentive care to promote good health and that works for the behavioural needs for that animal. Preparing organic products is a very careful process that should be handled in order to keep the organic sincerity of the fruitage or livestock. Organic farms usually run off of renewable energy sources since they are better for the environment. General Prohibitions With the list of rules to follow for organic farming there is a list of things that are generally prohibited. Prohibited products and practices cannot be used on certified organic farms for at least three years before the harvest of certified organic products. Livestock must be raised organically, meaning they eat organically grown food and they aren’t caged in and are able to socialize with other animals. Products of genetically engineering are prohibited. The use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, sludge, drugs, food processing aids, and ingredients are also restricted. Why Grow Organically and Weed Management There are many reason why we should farm organically. Farming usually requires a lot of energy for the intensive processes or growing their crops which mainly rely on fossil fuels however, if you farm organically you use renewable energy which doesn’t cause pollution and is overall a much better energy source. Above all organic farming is more profitable and self rewarding. Since farming organically results in the prohibition of synthetic pesticides, there are weeds. There are many ways to remove weeds organically. Tillage is one of the many ways to remove weeds, this method consists of turning the soil in between crops to remove the existing weed growth. Another method is mowing/cutting which us removing the top growth of weeds. Flame weeding/thermal weeding is the process of killing weeds using heat. And finally mulching is blocking weed growth by covering the ground with organic material or plastic films. Conclusion Ultimately, organic farming is a good way to preserve the environment and get good produce. Without the use of pesticides and fertilizers you can still produce great produce that will be chemical free and great to eat.
