The mouth of the Mississippi river is home to what is known as a dead zone. Scientifically this dead zone can also be referred to as a hypoxia. Hypoxia occurs when an area has no oxygen in the water causing no living organisms to be able to survive in the area. While these dead zones were once not very common, today the amount of hypoxia is increasing all over the world. The dead zone on the gulf of Mexico is continuing to increase every day, taking away the biodiversity of our ecosystem. Dead Zones can lead to a great amount of damage to the environment and the species living in it. Dead zones negatively impact our environment in many ways including harming the animals and the plants in the area. One way that it affects the animals in the environment is that fish aren’t able to predict where a dead zone is and once they are in one it is hard for them to escape. Also, dead zones severely impact the amount of biodiversity in the water when they occur because of how little species can survive with such little oxygen. When dead zones happen, fish often become toxic thanks to pollution, this could pose a threat to humans who eat fish. Dead zones main cause is when algal blooms decompose and use the oxygen from the ocean. This usually causes animals to die and soon the area becomes a dead zone because the oxygen is little to none. Algal blooms main cause is nutrient pollution, which is caused by humans polluting the ocean. Hypoxia is very damaging to the ocean and the animals in the area, but there are some ways to prevent it. Hypoxia is a horrible thing that often causes a lot of damage, but there are ways that we can help prevent them from forming or even growing. Being smarter about the chemicals that we put into the ocean can be very vital in preventing dead zones from developing. It is also important that people make sure to be careful with where we put our waste and sewage. We should also be aware that the ocean is not a trash can and we should not treat it like it is one. Using less fertilizer or finding a fertilizer that does not pollute the water will help with not only dead zones but the whole problem of water pollution around the world.
